Stanford University hosted the widely acclaimed Emerson String Quartet for a well-attended concert at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall. The program featured the famed, hauntingly melodic string quartets of impressionist composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. The program’s middle piece, which employed both 12-tone and chromatic scales, was one of Alban Berg’s first string quartets. Berg, as you may know, was an outstanding but highly unconventional early 20th-century Austrian composer.
