The Great American Tradition
IN THE BAY AREA MILLIONS HAVE VISITED the redwood cathedral that is part of Muir Woods National Monument, but few know the dramatic story of how William and Elizabeth Kent saved this beautiful expanse from eager business interests by donating it to the public. This story is common to many conservation efforts.
Alarmingly, as part of the stream of antienvironmental news coming from Washington, DC, there are reports that the administration is looking to privatize some public lands.
Common Ground is proud to present this timely pictorial, adapted from Wildlands Philanthropy: The Great American Tradition by Tom Butler and Antonio Vizcaino as a reminder of the importance of preserving the spectacular majesty of nature. Special thanks to Tom and Antonio and Earth Aware Editions.
