“Most of my life has been spent discovering how disease manifests itself in the human body,” says integrated health practitioner Sarah Mowdy. As a student exploring biology at the University of Minnesota, Mowdy witnessed the natural tendency of cancer DNA to promote healthy, non-cancerous tissues when placed in a highly nourishing, natural environment. This prompted her to ask: “Why do we dose our bodies with toxic chemicals to make our bodies less toxic? Why not infuse life-promoting nutrients and apply therapies that encourage re-generation rather than de-generation?”
Convinced that medicine’s goal should be “to heal, not to suppress, symptoms,” Mowdy enrolled at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine where a friend introduced her to aromatherapy. Initially skeptical, she became intrigued by the documented healing capacity of the oils.
Essential oils carry oxygen, proteins, vitamins and enzymes through the cellular veins of flowers, plants and trees. The “carrier molecules” in these oils can rush nourishment and healing agents through human bodies as well.
“Oils like peppermint and sandalwood can pass through the blood-brain barrier to relieve ‘brain fog’ by cleansing the body’s neurotransmitters,” Mowdy notes. A drop of cedarwood on the wrist can increase the flow of oxygen to the brain within 20 seconds. Oil therapy, says Mowdy, “ can halt the degenerative process and stimulate the tissues to regenerate. Therapeutic-grade helichriysum oil is the only known substance that can regenerate nerve tissue.” Oil therapy has proven effective for a range of maladies including depression, arthritis and asthma.
Oils range from food grade to cosmetic to therapeutic. They can be applied, inhaled or imbibed. Because they suffuse through the entire body within seconds, it is important to use only organically grown and harvested oil.
These days, Mowdy has a new focus: helping small businesses become “more in line with the natural law of action and consequences.” Mowdy feels that current operating systems are outmoded. What is needed today is the energy to identify the unhealthy actions and attitudes that frustrate the common goal of humanity — to enjoy life.
Mowdy’s Be Well Integrated Health program promotes physical, emotional and spiritual balance through the use of herbs, essential oils, acupuncture, attitudinal awareness, yoga and other natural therapies. The goal, Mowdy explains, is to achieve “a more integrated, inspired existence in our bodies. We can then extend that integrity and compassion to our relationships, careers and community. We awaken our own sense of humanity by looking deeply into the soul of our businesses,” Mowdy believes. Or, as the Be Well credo puts it: “When one’s attitude toward everything becomes a devotion, divinity reveals itself.”
