Change

Change comes from within. But it also comes from without. Common Ground magazine (and our sister publications in Chicago, LA and Seattle) are no longer part of the Dragonfly media family. In late 2005, ownership was transferred to Conscious Enlightenment, Inc, an organization that operates a number of socially responsible companies, including yoga studios and spiritual retreats.

There are other exciting changes in the works. Our partners at CE have purchased 100 new boxes to greatly expand the presence of Common Ground on the streets of San Francisco. The boxes will be profoundly purple. Look for them on a street corner near you or check the new locations here.

With this issue, Common Ground also moves to its new office at 604 Mission Street in San Francisco — a building that is shared by a number of progressive organizations and the humor tabloid, The Onion. Drop by and visit us at our new location.

We also are in the process of redesigning the magazine. The new Common Ground will move from newsprint to quality New Leaf stock (the same paper that’s used by Utne magazine) and, for the first time, there will be full color throughout the magazine. More details on our exciting new design will be forthcoming. Stay tuned.

Our editorial mission remains unchanged. We will continue cover health, the environment, food, lifestyles and social justice, while seeking out those special stories that explore the common ground between activism and spirituality.

It was two years ago that CG became a monthly magazine — after 30 years as a widely read regional quarterly. Much of the success of the new monthly magazine is due to the energy and vision of Editor Carl Nagin, a former New Yorker writer and Harvard instructor who moonlights as a flamenco guitarist.

Carl is leaving CG to write a book on global water issues. He will remain on duty at CG as a Contributing Editor while the day-to-day duties of editing will be assumed by CG ’s Associate Editor Gar Smith, an award-winning investigative journalist and the Editor Emeritus of Earth Island Journal.

We leave San Anselmo with many wonderful memories of friends, events and shared moments and we’re looking forward to making many new friends in the City of St. Francis.
