Thanks From Readers

Mil Gracias

I used to pick up Common Ground for the sometimes awesome color cover photographs and throw the rest away (excuse me, recycle, that is). Now I read it straight through with interest and enthusiasm. Thank you for this new and welcome addition to our neighborhood of news.

Spreading Some Sunshine

Thanks for your initiative in researching and writing the article on the Chavez Memorial Solar Calendar. (Dock of the Bay, June 2004, CG) I thought it was well done. I particularly liked the title “Art and Sol.” As we move to the final Council approval, such publicity is always helpful. Also, it makes our effort known to a new audience.

Our Ad Policy Is Unmatched

Thank you for your decision to refuse Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co.’s ad. (May,June 2004, CG) If Dragonfly Media is committed to being a socially responsible company, I think you must refuse all ads for tobacco products. Tobacco is unique because it is the only legal substance that, when used as directed, will harm a person’s health. Every year, 400,000 Americans die as a result of tobacco use. For comparison, the Vietnam War killed 58,000 Americans and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks killed 3,ooo. Tobacco kills about the same number of Americans as seven Vietnam Wars per year or two Sept. 11 terrorist attacks per week, every week of the year. I think refusing to cooperate with such evil is not enough. Dragonfly Media should actively oppose the tobacco industry.

Where There’s Smoke . . .

Your article entitled “Confessions of a Recovering Pyromaniac” was a masterpiece!! I learned so much about chemistry and nuclear science in one four-column article than I have truly learned in a college textbook.

Thanks for writing so clearly. Your article helped me work with clients of mine who are exhibiting allergies, cold-like symptoms, which have occurred in the past two-three weeks (post-July Fourth celebrations! Aha!)

Yes, sometimes it does take a near-disaster (your July 4th Alcatraz fire) before we truly “see the light.”

Thanks, again.
